Room Capacity

Pharmacology & Physiology houses an Olympus FLUOVIEW FV3000 laser confocal microscope with 5 laser lines (405, 488, 561, 594, 640) available for use by researchers throughout the University. The microscope is equipped with two standard PMTs, two high-sensitivity PMTs, and a hybrid galvanometer/resonant scanner. This microscope is capable of capturing most fluorophores and able to simultaneously image four distinct fluorescent signatures.

The microscope is equipped with 3 air objectives (1.25x, 10x, 20x), 3 oil objectives (30x, 60x, 100x), a Differential Interference Contrast (DIC) detector, Z-Drift Compensator controller, and an environmental chamber. This configuration will allow investigators to image cells or tissues under a large variety of situations and conditions.

General Instrument Guidelines

  • At the end of each session, users must clean the surrounding space and lenses used.
  • Any spills must be immediately cleaned and reported to staff for further technical care. Individuals who do not report spills will not be able to use the microscope again.
  • Any slides with oil cannot be used with dry lenses. Oil on a non-oil objective must be cleaned immediately with ethanol and reported to staff.
  • No food or drinks are allowed in the microscope room.

Booking

  • Microscope bookings are made through Drexel-medicine.libcal.com (you must have a @drexel.edu or @drexelmed.edu to book). You must sign up in order to use the microscope, no exceptions.
  • Bookings are restricted to only those who have completed training.
  • If you are over 30 minutes late for your reservation, your reservation may be canceled without notice.
  • Individual bookings are restricted to a maximum of 4 hours per session per 24 hours.
  • Cancelations must be done at least 24 hours in advance to provide others the opportunity to use the microscope.  If you do not cancel your reservation on time, your future booking priority will be reduced.
  • Special requests please email Darin Ipe at dmi32@drexel.edu

Training

  • Trainings on the confocal microscope are performed by Olympus personnel or specific staff of Pharmacology & Physiology only.
  • Training is mandatory for all users of the microscope. User to user training does not fulfill this requirement.

Computer

  • Users are not permitted to install or download software on the computer.
  • Files will be deleted periodically off the computer. Please remove your data immediately after use.
  • Users must use the provided USB drive to transfer data on and off the computer. You must return this USB drive to Pharmacology’s front office when you are done. Please do not connect your own storage mediums to the computer.
